When it comes to poking fun out of high fashion, it’s not particularly difficult. YouTube comedy duo Zac and Jay have it down to a fine art, however, and this year they employed a 78-year-old grandmother decked out in a green outfit accessorized with thrift-store accoutrements to playfully mock the industry.
This entertaining video from The Zac and Jay Show documents the process of what went into this somewhat elaborate prank: auditioning potential models, designing the outfit, and turning up to invitation-only events and being waved through without even being asked your name.
The world of high fashion is an easy target and it’s not unusual for designers to produce outrageous outfits that make people question what is real and what is actually secretly intended as satire. A 78-year-old grandmother dressed in wellies and bubble-wrap might be ridiculous, but when designers are often doing the same thing, is it us mocking the fashion industry or the fashion industry mocking us? In a world of Instagram influencers, pretentious magazines, and people with so much money that they don’t know what to do with it, the layers of self-referentiality quickly become difficult to track.
Was this year's effort as successful as Maximilian Bucharest from 2019? Leave your thoughts below.
Well done and entertaining! Well done guys.
That was fun! :-)
I think a lot of "fashion shows" are about creating sensation.
Yes the outfits look completely ridiculous. Thats the point. They are not expected to be worn either, its just "art".
The fashion industry is just anxious about what they can do next, in fear of the competition and in fear of not being provocative enough to be talked about.
They make the most money on perfumes anyway....
The problem is fashion shows aren't just shows to show what they will be selling next season. Some are literally just art shows. Some are a mix where the shoes are the next seasons' shoes, but the jackets and everything else are just art pieces that accent the rest.
As for this... All they did was dress someone up ridiculous and people who were doing their jobs... Did their jobs. I don't know what you expect. If you jumped into a marathon right before the area where they give you water and they gave you a cup.... You didn't just scam a bunch of idiots. They were just doing their job and you were doing what all marathon runners were doing.
Argh. Pesky fingers. Thank you.
It's a new Photoshop feature.
These videos show up every year, and every year I just don't know why they exist. A bunch of photographers took pictures of someone who was oddly dressed during a time when everyone does crazy fashion. Also, the article she's in is just a gallery of over 100 images of things that photographer saw while at London Fashion Week... They didn't put her on the runway for her fashion choices, she "bought in" to the culture and they took pictures of someone out at the events.
The problem with fashion week is this is the only time people not in the fashion world see these people so they think this is everyday life for them when really it's more like a holiday where they get to dress up and have fun. It's like if you thought everyone wore ugly Christmas sweaters year round because you only saw people in December...
